Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
