The US administration announced it would offer limited relief to countless SNAP recipients as the continuing federal closure approached a historic period.
Funding Decrease Information
Amid mounting concern for the approximately 42 million individuals registered in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the USDA confirmed it would utilize emergency resources to sustain assistance, although at merely 50% of the usual amount recipients normally receive.
Resources for the assistance legally ended on the weekend due to the federal closure, now in its 34th consecutive day with no sign of ending.
Legal Proceedings
The revelation came in a judicial submission after previous denials to release urgent funding on alleged legal grounds. A federal judge had determined the administration could not withhold program funds as a result of the shutdown.
Subsequent to the legal directive, the administration stated it would be "pleased" to authorize emergency funding for the program.
Execution Hurdles
Administrators suggested that funds could start flowing by Wednesday, but emphasized the need for further guidance from the legal system on how to properly transfer money for SNAP benefits.
- Various authorities have indicated it will take multiple days or even weeks to distribute funds to vulnerable households.
- Extended lines have been documented at food banks throughout the country.
- In various states, large venue parking lots were repurposed into assistance centers.
Local Emergency Responses
Various states, such as New York, Oregon, and Virginia, announced states of emergency to provide short-term money for benefits. However, these amounts were expected to be a small portion of the normal government funding.
The government costs for SNAP reach approximately $8 billion each month across the United States.
